When I was about 3 years old, I had been living on 3 hours sleep and I had no day time naps. I was never tired and never got irritable because of lack of sleep.

Because my mother was so firm about children bed times, I used to wonder what would happen to a child if it had been awake for more than 48 hours (2 days and 2 nights) non-stop without a wink of sleep; would they die?

What's her piont?

Whats YOUR point? Did your mother tell you that you never slept? And if she is so firm about bedtimes then why are you asking? Maybe at 3 years old you were allergic to something,or had a sleeping problem. Maybe your mother is firm about sleeping times because of what she went though with you as a child. Children have alot of energy, they need there sleep. No I don't think they would die..I think they would be very crabby, tantrums, and behavrial problems. My daughter is 4 and still wakes 2-5 times a night and it shows in her daily routien as she is craby and does not play well with others if she does not sleep well. Does this help?

sleep is necessary for proper mental health and physical healing, among other things.

One of the big reasons parents want their kids to sleep is that they can't roll with the events of the day if they're not well-rested. Plus, lots of grownups like alone-time after the kids go to bed.
