It's as necessary to me as boiled rice is to the chinese and tastes nicer too. Nothing more comforting than a bowl of mash if properly made! Potatoes are better for you cooked in the skin but people often mash the inside before serving them! And most potato products are made from some form of mashed potato so I'd say it's an essential food. To our society.

The point is to have potatos.

It is a necessary style of food because its already part of western culture and I dont think you or I can stop the power of the mashed potato. It is quite a force to be reckoned with.

Now stop asking potato questions, and if an unmarked van starts following you, I DON'T KNOW YOU!

Mashed potato is a great comfort food, and as other people have said, there are a lot of recipes which use it. I dread to think of a world with no mashed potato!

YES. the world would not be the same without mashed potato. Without it no Shepherd's/Cottage/Ocean pie. No potato croquettes. No smiley face potato things. No bangers and mash. No food for hangovers. No food for toothless people. No Close Encounters of the Third Kind. No bubble n squeak. No point in life.

What an interesting question. I, personally, prefer baked potatoes but mash potatoes made from real potatoes and not from a box are extraordinarily delicious. And there are several really yummy recipes that should be made with mash potatoes.

As mashed potato is my favorite (better than chips...in fact I wished there was a Fish & Mash Shop invented) there is a point to it. Its easy to do, its a very cheap food, its easy to eat, spesh, if you're not well. when I was little, I had this with soup, and even now ??years later, when I'm not well its still the only thing I fancy to eat. So theres more to it than Shepherds pie, Bangers and Mash, Pie 'n' Mash (plus Liquer)....the list is endless....so please don't say it is pointless!

Are you English? I doubt it as I would not expect an English person asking this question. This is like asking the Indians if you need rice with their curry!!! Or maybe the Japs if they do not need sushi. Mashed potatoes are a part of English Culture for as long as history is recorded. Almost!!! It complements gravy, goes well with veggies and you can even have sausages & bake beans (pref. Heinz) with them.

If you're as bad at cooking as me then boiled potatoes are like mash anyway, so you may as well go the whole hog and mash them with a little butter and milk and some sort of flavouring (brown sauce, mint sauce, chili, etc.)

Well its the ideal material to make an edible volcano.
Pile it up on the plate in a cone and make a crater in the top. Surround the cone with sausages sticking out like trees. Add some peas for an alpine pasture effect, and carve some edam cheese into little houses to encircle the base. Then pour hot baked beans into the crater, allowing them to slide down and threaten the terrified villagers (sweet corn, diced veg etc).

A little tomato sauce on top makes it more dramatic, as does a pyroclastic flow (gravey).

I especially love mashed sweet potato, yum yum yum, I would be lost without it, when I fell down/hormonal I eat mashed sweet potato and all is well with the world (without it, my visa bill would be huuuuuuuge)
