Yes - field (also called performance or American) Labs & bench (also called conformation or English) Labs. Field labs have been bred for retrieving performance for generations and can be found at field & hunting trials & have performance championship titles in their pedigrees. Bench labs have been bred to fit the breed's standard - AKC's physical description of the Labrador Retriever, and will have conformation championships in their pedigree. Field labs are generally leaner, rangier & have longer, narrower heads. Bench labs are stoutly built with square heads and a thick 'otter' tail the breed standard calls for - they have a square build more similar to a Rottweiler. Field labs tend to be more energetic to be able to handle the rigors of the field, while bench Labs are more laid back & suitable for living calmly in a home.

Yes. American breed (working labs) tend to be longer leaner, more hyper & energetic. While British labs are stockier & thicker, they tend to be show labs. Both are pure-bred, just bred differently some of the best pets come from mixing the lines.

Labs used for field trials/hunting tend to be leggier/leaner. Labs bred for comformation/the show ring, tend to be shorter, stockier, heavier, bigger heads, etc.

I think that Mustanglynnie has given you an amazing answer .... & it tallies with what I read just yesterday in a book about a man & his labrador.
Marley & Me: Life & Love with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan.
The book was brilliant AND it discussed the difference between labradors - though I must admit it also made me cry.
I recommend adding it to your Christmas Wish List.

You got the lanky, tall, hyper kind that they are calling the "American" Lab.....which means we took the shorter, stocky, calmer English/Show Lab and mutated it into what you have. Calling it "working" type makes everyone feel better about it. Truth is, it is not what the "standard" for the breed calls for.

okay the best way to find out whether you have been lied to is that if you have a pure breed dog you should beable to open its mouth and look at the roof of the mouth if you see a lot of pink then you are not dealing with a lab you are dealing with a mix a if the roof is all black then you are dealing with a pure breed please let me know if u have found out
