We have a Teacher's Supply store near us and they sell just about all the teaching supplies that elementary school teachers use. I bet there's one near you, too. Check the Yellow Pages. If not, maybe a Borders or Barnes and Noble. In this type of teacher's store, you'll find training manuals on the basics of good penmanship. It reads as if you need to start over with learning how to write neatly and legibly. If you can give it enough practice time, I'm sure that you'll be able to improve your handwriting skills. Good luck!

My dad had terrific handwriting, so I don't think it's a male-female thing.
I've changed the style of my writing periodically over the years. Usually what I do is get a sample of the writing I like and try to duplicate it by writing on top of it and following the lines over and over. Try to keep an eye on how the pen/pencil moves to make certain patterns.
If things don't seem to be changing the way you'd like, instead of using a pen, use a crayon. The bigger the writing instrument, the larger your letters will be and this will force you to break your existing patterns.
Good Luck!

It is not too late at all. Studies prove that the brain can learn things quickly at certain times and age ranges in your life. Right now at 23 you are at the beginning of that period. So if you try and practice writing a lot than you will be able to improve. I also suggest trying to just practice writing the alphabet. Don't write to large and don't write too small either. Soon it will get better.
Good Luck!

ahh me too! forget the person who said it was a male gene, i am female and my handwriting is at the same level as a pre-school boy. type whenever possible, but the best advice i can give is to TAKE YOUR TIME writing.
when you're in a squeeze and you scribble things out, you get accustomed to writing with that speed and you start scribbling sloppily even when you're not in a rush. it becomes a habit. take your time and visualize the letters before you write them. that sounds elementary, but when we're rushed we don't even bother thinking about how to make the shapes of letters. it's gotten pretty bad for me, i have to delay my train of thought just thinking how to write a perfect "w", mine end up like the letter "u"
TAKE YOUR TIME!!

you could type everything. but since you probably are out of school or in college, that might not work all the time.
actually set time aside and keep writing and rewriting the alphabet uppercase and lowercase. go slow. as you keep doing this, it will become easier and you will go faster.

Practice over and over trying to write better. Or just live with it.
