I suppose there are many answers to this question depending on the individual -- perhaps they work hard during the week and prefer sleeping in on the weekend, perhaps they have tried a few churches near them and didn't like them. I think the reasons are deeper than this though.

For one, religion itself is on a decline. Many people who were once very religious and avid attenders of church are now spiritual and see no reason to go. They believe a personal relationship with God is most important.

Also there has been a growth of animity. Where once, people would know everyone else who attended their Church there was an added pressure / reason to attend. Now people could miss several weeks and no one will ask where they were.

You must have given them your email and phone#, so it is normal they would contact you. If you ask them to stop, they should stop. If they don't, it is rude. But from their point of view, they probably feel bad that you were hurt by a church and now don't want to go to church, and they want to persuade you that this time it will be good. I don't think a church that responds that way is sensitive or professional enough to deal with your issues. Or, there is always the possibility that the church is not a good one anyway, that it has significant ethical flaws. Anyway, all I can say is that what happened in the church that hurt you will not necessarily happen in another, and it is a good idea to put some research and fact-finding into it before choosing a new church, if you ever do. Use your brain to help you find one that fits you and is a good church.

I go to church because I want to be closer to God and so go to church to hear the gospel being preached and to be taught the meaning of the Message.
I also think part of being a Christian is about meeting other Christians and being taught by them, and teaching them. Group prayer is also very powerful and moving. The Bible teaches that we arre all within the same family- would you go without seeing your family at all? It's the same thingwithin a church community. You obviously haven't been going to the right church if you think otherwise. Church makes you realise that you aren't the only one and that there are other people on the same side as you.
Churches also offer more than just Biblical teaching. They are an important part of the community, often being involved in youth work and overseas projects. Many churches also offer childrens groups, Christianity classes, youth volunteer schemes, charity work and social activities to the community. These are incredible ways of bringing an otherwise seperated and often alienated community together, as well as doing good.
So going to church isn't about sitting listening to someone talking and throwing Bible quotes around. It is about the message of Hope the Bible brings, community, loving God, worship (singing is seen as a form of worship too, and forms an important part of my church's service) and most of all, the salvation that can only be achieved through Jesus Christ.
I know where I'll be this Sunday- in my Father's house.

I dont know that they really dont. I live in a major city in the uk, and the church that i go to is packed out on a sunday, so are the ones around where we live of all denominations, some of the others catholic and prodestant churches may be a bit dull for some but i go to a modern elim penecostal church with a young pastor who gets to know all the people and can relate to the people that go to his church,i go to a church where only 250 people go to but there are others in our city with 5000 people attending. not just on sundays either church's have weekly meetings and cafe's, theres always peoples homes too, some people cann't be bothered but they are the ones missing out.

I think there are a number of reasons:
1. Churches aren't meeting the needs of people any more because they have gotten away from the Word of God. Jesus said you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. He also said, My Word is truth. People go to church and come away feeling no better off than when thay came'
2. Chirches are very superficial today. They have gotten hung up so much on music, which makes you feel good while you are doing it, but when you stop the feeling go away and you still have to face the issues of life in reaality.
3. The Bible predicts that in the last days there will be a falling away of the church into what the Bible calls lukewarmness. God says, (Revelation 3) I wish you were hot or cold, but because you are lukewarm I will spit you out of my mouth. He is talking to the end time church in that passage.
What people go to church for is spiritual growth. The church today seems to be giving them everything except spirituality. There is everything going on at church from weight loss programs, crafts, activities, tours etc. People don't need church for that they can get most of it at the YMCA.

i do,and the reason alot of people don't is because the shops are now open on a sunday, and some people don't think it is worth their while going.society today has taught people that going to church is the wrong thing to do,we need to turn that way of thinking around.

Many people are fed up with christendoms lies and double standards they are being spiritually starved living off platitudes and church tradition and very little spiritual food they hear a lot of rhetoric and political and mostly give me your money sermons and the usual damnation sermons then there is the moral quagmire sexual abuses fraud criminal actions gossip sessions little or none of the Bible is taughjt and if so it is misapplied to their own end and little or none of the things Jesus said to do are talked about and rarerly ever done so much greed and commercialism and abuses of power corruption when a church has a preacher driving limos and his dog lives better than most of the members that tells you something about their priorities and in general they are not safe places to be especially when Revelation chaps 17 ,18 are going to happen very shortly Gorbalizer

Faith is a mighty word in some cultures. People go for a place to pray and sunday is considered as the Sabbath day. Or it can be cosidered as a holy place to say thank you for all your got and I don't mean possessions I mine health, Walking, seeing the wonders of life that most take for congranted.

the church in the uk has a bad reputation for being boring, but mine isn't! I never went to church as I was growing up as I wasn't a christian until 4 years ago, but I wish I'd known you could experience the living Jesus and see healings and powerful testimonies, I might have gone sooner! I hardly miss it, I'd feel empty.
