Soozi, what you are saying is so true. I have many of my older friends that are raising their grandchildren. Having to raise them on their social security checks, some them are. Can you imagine the struggle that they are having to deal with month after month. I don't know what has happened.
It would seem that they would do something to stop having children, if they didn't care. One of my friends has 3 grandkids to raise from her daughter. Three different daddies, she thinks she's in love, gets pregnant to trap him-then decides nope-she doesn't want the man and she don't want the child either. 3 kids on her Social Security disability check. She's a wonderful woman, but she just can't seem to tell her daughter no. She would take in 3 more if her daughter decides she's in love again.
I honestly think a woman can be without a mother's natural affection, and that's ok. If that's the case, then go get yourself fix, don't ask Grandma and Grandpa to raise them. Thank you for asking the question. You are very right it is sad!
God bless us all.................

Gran looks after the Kids here in Thailand so that Mom can go to work.
If you don't work here you don't eat!
The men are a lazy, whisky sodden lot (mostly). They often sleep all day, and so it's the Ladies who put food on the table. Bless 'em.
Thai Ladies do everything. Building, Sweeping the streets, selling things in the Markets, nothing is too hard. They can do it all.
Starting at about 5.30 am, 24/7. Poor things.
But they keep smiling all the same. You lot in the UK don't know how lucky you are.

First of all, remember the old saying about walking in another persons shoes? Every situation is different, and unless it's your own then you just don't know. There are certain circumstances where it is in the best interest of the child to be with the grandparents. When my son was 6 years old I was not able to take care of him properly and my parents took over. I wanted him, loved him, but did not have the means to care for him. I was not on drugs, just divorced and had no job and no place to live. He now has graduated from college with a BA in engineering! I cannot thank my parents enough for what they did for both of us!! I did not abandon my son, he calls me "mom" and we email, visit and talk often! Please....... do not judge!!

I understand how you feel, but me being a grandparent that takes care of her grandkids. I would rather them be with me, then with parents that can't handle the pressure of parenthood. You see on the news all the time about parents that committed suicide or killed their kids because of the pressure.
My daughter and her kids moved with me, because she couldn't handle the pressures of parenthood and she was getting suicidal, she's better now, but she still get depressed, not like she was before. So to help her get it together and give the kids a loving home, they're here with me.

What do you think is the driving factor, is it society, or just the individuals? We find it hard to get the grandparents to babysit for a couple of hours once a fortnight!!

i suppose the only saving grace about those situations you mention is that at least these poor kids are with family rather than taken into the "care" of social services, because their up bringing would be even worse in a children's home

Or maybe - the mums are hardworking tax payers like me who chose to leave their children with responsible adults who they trust to be responsible and good role models,(ie, grandparents) rather than shoving them in a nursery with complete strangers and publicised issues of neglect and bullying??
