research research research!
my tattooist told me that someone came in and asked for something "pretty" so she tattooed "silly little monkey" on her.
decide if you want it in hiragana or katakana or kanji (it makes a difference, because one of them was given by the chinese, one is for written and one is ..I forget.)
but anyways, research it carefully, and find out all the meanings behind it before you get it inked.

I had a friend gat a japanese tattoo symbol and discovered it really didn't mean what the artist said it did... oh, no.. and it's permanent.. Please consider the following:
Tattooing has been banned in some states for health and safety reasons. Unsterile tattooing equipment can transmit infections, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C and even HIV. The risk is so significant that the American Association of Blood Banks requires a one-year wait between getting a tattoo and donating blood.
Q: What signs of infection should someone who has been tattooed watch for?
A: Increased pain, tenderness, swelling, heat around the tattoo site, red streaks, pus, swollen lymph nodes - all of these are signs that you need to see a doctor for antibiotics.
Q: What other risks are involved?
A: You could get granulomas, little nodules that can form around the tattoo, or keloid scar formation. Some people are prone to developing these keloid scars, which grow beyond the boundary of the tattoo. Granulomas and keloids are permanent unless you have them surgically removed.
Also, allergic reactions, although rare, can happen.

What is important to you? Strength? Love? Happiness?
I would do your research and make sure whatever you get actually says what it's supposed to, I read a newpaper article a few years back about a japenese artist who was tattooing things like "tr*mp" and "sl*t" on people...

If your asking strangers what you should get tattood you might want to think twice about getting one, it should reflect you, just make sure that anything Japanese actually says what you want it to say!!

My japanese teacher wrote out the symbol for 'tiger' for me. (cause that's the year I was born)
And then my full name (phonetically) down the side of it.
It looks awesome, and if I ever get amnesia I'll hire someone to read it for me and I'll know my name and year of birth!
