For Ireland, contact the head of the prison chaplaincy service - Fr Declan Blake at Arbour Hill Prison, Dublin 7. Arbour Hill has a wide range of prisoners (serious and small-time offendors) and one of this prison's proudest achievements is that it is one of the world's largest suppliers of braille books for the blind - all put together by the prisoners and made on-site.

English/Welsh Prisons

How can I find my relative/friend in prison?
If you wish to trace someone who you believe is in prison custody but do not know his or her exact whereabouts a service has been developed called the Prisoner Location Service that can help you.

If you want to contact the Prisoner Location Service, please write to them at the following address:

Prisoner Location Service

PO Box 2152

Birmingham

B15 1SD

Fax: 0121 626 3474

Email: prisoner.location.service@hmps.gsi.gov.uk

The following information must be included with your enquiry:

* Full name of person you want to contact
* Any other names by which they may have been known
* Date of Birth
* Reason for enquiry

If the person is in custody, your details will be passed to them and he or she will be asked to give consent for the disclosure of their whereabouts.

All replies and disclosures of information will be in accordance with departmental rules and data protection legislation

Scottish Prisons

Is it possible for me to be told if a specific individual is held in a Scottish Prison?

It may be possible to confirm that an individual (i.e. name only) is currently held in a Scottish Prison, but in line with the Data Protection Act, we are unable to give out specific details of the prisoner, i.e. prison number and the prison they are located in. However, if you wish to write to a prisoner (but do not know the name of the prison they are located in), you can do so by sending your letter to the Communications Branch at SPS Headquarters, and we will ensure that the letter is passed on. It is important to remember however, that we cannot guarantee that the prisoner would respond to or acknowledge your letter. This would be for the prisoner to decide.
