I just tolerate it, but I try to keep moving from area to area so I don't get too much time listening or interacting with the same people for too long. What can be done really depends upon what kind of work we do. MY worst time is when I'm not with a client. Otherwise, it is easier.

I work in a call center, so I just wave at the phone to let them know I have a call, and then stretch out the call as long as I can. It works for the supervisors when the want to ask annoyingly useless questions.

I use this same technique when my children are yammering on all day long and I could just string myself up if I hear one more person go MUM! I play a song really loud in my head. I think of things I have to do or just did, conversations with my husband or someone else who wasn't whining to me. It works.

Wear headphones or ear buds all day long, even if you're not listening to music, and when they ask you something make a big point out of removing the ear buds.

I used my ipod or would politely say aloud, can you please keep it down.

It's not what you say it's how you say it that gets the better response from the annoying person.

Most of the time they don't know that they are being loud.

You either need to mentally block them out, or if you can, tell your boss its hurting your performance, and that youd like to be moved...away from THEM.
