I see a lot of blue jays, robins, all kinds of pegions and crows everyday by the hundreds, year around, but "red cardinals" only once in a while during winter months, does anyone know why, and is it the same where you live? I live in Houston,Tex. are the mostly in the rural areas?

I live in Kentucky and even though the cardinal is our state bird, I still don't see them very often. A few in the summer, and that's about it.

Northern Cardinals should be there year-round in your area. They don't migrate much, maybe a bit on the edges of the range. Perhaps they are just easier to notice in the winter when there are less leaves on the trees.

I live in Michigan and Cardinals are flying around my backyard and sitting on the fence all throughout the summer. Maybe it is too hot down there in the summer for them and they leave from up here because it has gotten too cold and come there to spend the winter.

Must be nice to have wings to live where you want throughout the year without having to move your belongings and paying for air flight. :D

Birds fly south for the winter . . . . the saying is true! :)

I'm in southern Minnesota. The cardinal i have live in the liolac bushes, I think they had 2 batches of young...I see the young at the feeder and sometimes Daddy, but the adults are elusive....I see them in the Winter at the feeder, but the young may fly south...I don't know.

I've heard they like sunflower seeds for attracking them...

They Migrate for food, not because it get's cold, so if you give them food some of them mgiht not migrate.
