I've found that the best way is to use a brush to dry your hair, by pulling it taut as you dry, it starts to straighten it. Then use your flat iron.
Next, or if your hair is already dry, pull most of your hair up, just leaving a thin layer down at the very bottom (usually starting in the back). Straighten the layer using a brush to untangle the hair as you go, and hold each section of the hair in the brush for a second or two after using the flat iron, let the hair cool while it is still held by the brush.
Repeat by straightening the hair in layers, letting pieces down from pony tail or bun until you get to the top of the head and the pieces around the face.

I have very thick, frizzy, and wavy hair. It has frustrated me since I was very young. I've found that Kerastase Oleo Relax is the best product for my hair type. Towel dry hair after a shower, use the Oleo Relax Serum, blow dry with a round brush, fivide your hair into four or five sections and use a ceramic straightener. This can be time consuming, but it will give you bone straight shiny hair.

get a CHI straightener and use CHI serum before straightening. its really expensive, but its worth it. look on ebay.
I have a friend that has really wiry, thick huge curly hair, and she gets a straight-perm. its like a perm but it makes your hair permanently straight...the roots grow out curly of course so you have to go back and get it done every 6 weeks or so...but most nice salons will be able to do this. it works, her hair looks totally naturally straight and shiny now.

for a cheap fix, try coconut oil before you wash the hair. Massage it in to dry hair and leave on (put a towel over your pillow though!)
It rinses out easily and helps prevent fluff. You could also rub a little between you hands and use sparingly as a serum after blow drying.

If you want to tone down the fluff and waves, there are many methods. Go to a beauty supply store. You need to use srtaighteners first. They will help you choose the right products.
