There are jobs that the English don't want to do admittedly, but by the same standard there are jobs that we are prepared to do, but cannot get them as the employers do not want to pay the wages that we expect, so they hire the immigrants at a lower wage and leave us out of the job market. This is also lowering our standard of living back to the level of other poorer countries. This is breeding a lot of resentment, and adds to fuelling a backlash towards the race relations that the government is hoping will integrate smoothly. My wife is Welsh. but does not speak welsh as it was never a requirement in South Wales to do so, so why they make welsh speaking a requirement for a welsh local authority job is beyond me. I just hope that something will soon be done to rectify this problem before it's too late.

ok, its difficult to know what way to answer this, it all depends whether you're approaching this from a "back to their own country" point of view or not.
If that's the way that you're approaching it then i've got to point out that last time i checked its a round world out there and giving out about immigrants is off the mark imo.
If you're giving out about immigrants you're missing your focus on the real culprit - the employers - or, for want of a better world, capitalism. The rich in society will exploit immigrants - both legal and illegal to their own end. That might be the callifornian rich with mexican cleaners or suppliers to sainsbury's that use illegal pickers, packers and so on.
Why do they do it? well as said above its all about the money.
What should be done? Well the Trade unions need to work at recruiting lowpaid (and illegal) workers - fighting for conditions, pushing for government recognition of illegals - even organising english language classes.
Blaming the immigrants - the lowest paid in the race to the bottom - is the wrong end of the stick and can lead to a very nasty set of conclusions

Welsh is not a dead language. There are few jobs in Wales that you need it for. I think you are taking immigration a bit far if you include the other parts of the UK in your rantings. Eastern Europeans may be different but did you vote in Blair? That's your answer.

The jobs they are taking around here are quite awful, One is a packed meals factory. They are paid the absolute minimum and I have heard that the firms take rent and transport of them, which is probably illegal. These firms are often black listed by the Job Centre and even if you are claiming JSA, you would not be forced to take a job with these firms because they are known bad employers.
BTW First group (bus Co part) take on Polish drivers because no one else wants to work for them. This country has hit rock bottom, employers are becoming complete tossers.

Jake:
Why you asked if immigrant can work in the USA, I don't understand your question. All legal immigrants can and are working in the USA. That's the reason why we have a strong economy and a powerful country. We the American people are against the invasion of illegal immigration not legal immigration. Hey I used to have a girl friend from Wales, she was great!!! I met her in Tobuk, Saudi Arabia. Good luck.

Its not just "English" people who can't get an official job in Wales without speaking Welsh
I'm Welsh but like many of my countrymen I don't speak the language. I don't come from a Welsh speaking area of Wales, my parents didn't speak it and my school didn't teach it (The Welsh Language Act came in too late for me).
And I can't get an official job because of this! I'm a Welsh History Graduate but can't get a job working in Welsh History because I'm not bi-lingual!
How the hell do you think that makes me feel! Like a foreigner in my own country!
As for immigrants they do the same job for less. My (English) BF is a trained mechanic but can't get a job in the motor trade in Cardiff as trained mechanics are entitled to earn about £8 - £10 per hour and as Cardiff is full of Poles and the like its easier to employ a Pole who'll do the same job for £5 an hour, even if he can't speak English.
So my BF has to do a shitty minimum wage pub job even though he took the trouble to spend 3 years doing a mechanics apprenticeship. I don't know why he bothered.
Bella - because they won't offer him a job on £5 an hour - they KNOW he's trained and qualified to earn more so they won't offer him a £5 an hour job, they'll offer it to a foreigner who they know won't complain or take them to an industrial tribunal, which a British person might.
Besides we couldn't pay our mortgage and council tax etc on £5 an hour - he has to do all the overtime under the sun to get by as it is. Immigrants don't have council tax, mortgages etc to pay.

One word, capitalism. People want cheap labour, the kind of work that no Uk citizen will take but an imigrant will. We demand cheap products in the shops, producers want to make bigger profits so the easy way is to find a workforce willing to accept lower pay and poorer working conditions. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a communist, but capitalism has it's downsides too.
And for all those people going on about do gooders, it has nothing to do with them. The reason Imigrants find work is because people are greedy and want things for less.

Cause it's cheaper and if they can't speak English they can't demand things from the employer.
Ladymoonlight- Why doesnt your BF just take the £5 (its not far of mimimum wage)? That way he'll be doing something he enjoys, and hell be getting more experience which will help him when a better paid position comes up.

it's not a dead language if people still speak it.
it's an employer's discretion who they employ; if they have no scruples, they will employ someone who can't speak English on an 'unofficial' basis because a) they can pay them less b) if they can't speak English they can't complain and c) they're probably not going to pay tax on it and d) because they have no scruples.
maybe the Welsh have more morals, employment-wise? I don't know.

Because we have bosses of companies who are only too happy to exploit them. Lets face it a lot of immigrants are working legally and paying taxes. Putting some of our own benefit scroungers to shame. They should be taught English and integrated into our society properly.
