I went and looked at a lot of patterns at various stores. Wal-mart, target and at a huge fabric store i forgot the name. I found the patterns i like and pieced them together. The patterns weren't that expensive but the dress was beautiful. The material for my dress and all the notions cost me less than 100 dollars. You can do whatever you want and it will be your very own.

Wow - that's wonderful that you want to make your own wedding dress. When my sister was married years ago, we had to make our own dresses and as maid of honor, I wanted mine to be special and it turned out really nice. I'd wanted to make my own wedding gown too but didn't really get motivated enough to do so. Handmade will be treasured so much more than a store bought one! I've added some links below to help you get started.

The second link has beautiful dresses in elegant style with patterns costing around 99 dollars.

The third link are vintage patterns (28 dollars and up).

The fourth link has a lot more information, books you can buy with patterns AND fabrics for the dress.

If I had a daughter, I would make the dress for her. After all, you'd end up having it tailored to fit your body if you purchased one, so why not take the time to make it. If your wedding is a year away, you can do a little sewing each day to make it perfect.

Best of luck to you!

My daughter had been at david's birdal trying on dresses 2 weeks back. there was one dress that had purple flowers embrodered on it down the side. I will suggest not looking at ebay. My daughter saw a dress she liked and ordered it from a person in china. they made the dress for her. they sent her a pink colored wedding gown instead of an ivory colored gown. She has been trying to get her money back from it ever since

If you sew, find a pattern similar to what you have in mind for your dress and make the appropriate alterations. It isn't all the difficult and wedding dresses don't have to cost thousands of dollars. One of my co-workers is getting married next summer and her mom is making her dress. Another co-worker made her own dress from silk her fiance brought back from a trip to India.

Go to a local seamstress. Take pics and ideas of what you like (also let them know what you don't like) and they can create a dress based on that. You will have to go in for fittings though. But alot of brides say it's cheaper to have it custom made locally than to buy one from a bridal salon.
