....of all the symbols they could have used that one just screams "LOSER LOSER LOSER" and "I'm a little pirate"

ok some of you aint getting it. Germany was one of the most socially, politically artistically, sophisticated countries on earth yet they choose such a pathetic symbol. Societies create and use symbols to discribe themselves, whether its badges or flags. What we choose and what we dont choose tells us a lot.

If this was 1943 in Germany I would of invited you to go up to one and call him a loser to his face. The SS was one of the fiercest groups we had to deal with. They were a fanatical in the love of service to Hitler and his ideals as the Japanese were to the Emperor.

Apropos their learned status, Nazi Germany also took an ancient symbol, a perfectly good symbol which had been around for thousands of years and ruined it for at least the next thousand years. The swastika is a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Odinism. Who would dare use it now? So much for learning and sophistication. It takes more than that to make a real human being.

Your question is that of simple mindedness. You have to remember that back then, there were no computers to aid in the designs of the symbols used by any unit. So they were kept very simple. Besides, it is not the symbol that makes a unit feared, it is the unit that makes the symbol unforgettable.
