My Golden Retriever has a broken toe. He was chasing a rabbit at the park near our house and he must have hit something hard like a fallen branch or rock. So we took him to the vet the other day, they put a splint and cast on. The thing is, we didn't think he would need the cone (the thing that goes around the dogs neck to stop them getting at infections, etc). We went out for only 30 minutes and when we came back he had ripped the cast off, and while doing so he must have bitten his leg (the cone is now back on). His leg got infected from him licking it, so the vet gave us antibiotics, and he just won't take them.
We have tried everything! Covered them in peanut butter, put them in bread balls (he really likes bread), we tried to get into his throat but he's just so stubborn. He must have them or he will get sick from infection! What do I do?

Thanks for the advice so far, but food will not do it. He's very smart with this (his had to take antibiotics once before). He will eat the food and spit the pills out.

You've listed your facts, and it seems to me that you can only do one thing. My dog takes them well if you just gently put them down his throat. It never hurts him and he never resists taking them that way. Take the pills and put them one at a time in the back of you dog's throat, slowing closing the mouth after the pill was placed in the throat. Take your dog's head in your lap and just gently tilt it back to make your dog take the pills. It always works and DOES NOT hurt your dog. I wouldn't do it if it hurt my sweet dog! It won't hurt your sweet dog, either!

If you're not able to open his mouth and pop it down his throat yourself, you might do well to try a 'pill popper' - if you're able to hold him still, you may be able to quickly get it in the side of his mouth that way...they're like a stick with a little pair of rubber fingers on the end that hold the tablet and make pilling a dog or cat much easier.
Another way would be to crush the tablet and mix it with a little canned dog food and water to make a thick slurry - put it in a feeding syringe (you should be able to get one from your vet) and squirt the slurry into his mouth.

Contact you vet about a liquid form of the meds that you can use IF you think that would be better--They should be able to give you something--Also ask about a Pill Popper if you want to stick with the pills--ITS easy to use for the most part and they can show you how to use them--Pill Pockets are another option but again if he finds them in food he might in that as well.. Have you added them to his food bowl--My dogs eat their food so fast they take the pill and never know that they did LOL.. IF all else fails ask your vet if you can bring him in daily to get them to give him the pills--It might be a hassle but worth it to get him back to health..GOOD LUCK

Use a deal with that's tasty to him some thing tender like cheese or a tender piece of bread with peanut butter. Something the puppy likes and conceal the tablet. He will have to devour the deal with and now not even realize there was once a tablet in it.

Great trick...... Pinch off a piece of weiner, insert the pill in the center of the weinee and offer it to him.If still can't get it down him,try placing it in a small amount of canned dog food, sorta hide it in the food and he will never know it is in there,or you can purchase a gadget at any vet clinic called "Slip a pill" for this.

Crush the pill into a fine powder and work it into something that he likes: peanut butter, Velveeta cheese, paté, etc. (I know this sounds crazy...but don´t let him see you do this!)
If it is a capsule, open it up carefully and mix the little beads from inside into something he likes
And if he just won´t take the antibiotics, he´ll have to go get a shot

Well my family had the same problem once, try this: why dont you buy canned dog food (dogs love it) give him some without the pills and then once he tries it and eats it, try giving him some the next day with the pill in it. or just stick it down his throat, its not harmful. thats what our vet told us!! very good luck to you! :)

What I do with our Mini Schnauzer (who is VERY treat-oriented!) is I will give her a bit of wet food with the pill in it, and have a second bit of wet food (or a really yummy treat) in my other hand. As soon as she takes the piece of wet food with the pill, I stick the treat in front of her nose, a little above her eye level - it makes her keep her head up and interested in the treat, so she swallows what's in her mouth as quickly as possible so she can get the treat.
