Often swallowing problems associated with GERD are due to the upper esophageal spincter (the valve at the top of your esophagus) tightening in order to prevent acid from going up into your throat. You may find that alternating solids and liquids to be helpful. Make sure meats are chewed very well (to a puree consistency) before you swallow. As far as elevating the head of your bed, it should be at least 30 degrees. A wedge (available at medical supply stores) will be more comfortable than stacks of pillows.
Once you get relief from the GERD, the swallowing problem I described will go away. If you have a web, a gastroenterologist can usually fix it.

When you have GERD and start having difficulty swallowing it may be an indication of narrowing of the esophagus or wedding across the esophagus. Either way, you could be at risk of choking. You should see a Gastroenterologist for a scoping. If the find something during the scope they usually take care of it right then and there. It's a simple procedure.

Have you had any medical test done to diagnose you GERD or did they just start you on medication? Have they done X-rays, barium swallows, scopes? They will determine if you need to have you esophagus dilated.
I have taken care of several people that have had it done. They were sedated. They did not have any did comfort afterwords.
Left untreated will lead to erosion of your esophagus and eventually a feeding tube.
The benefits out weigh the risks. Good luck.

Yes dear,I have GERD & I'm following ttt,but not regularly,so,I suffer heart burn,water brush & rarely dysphagia[difficulty in swallowing],chest pain,regurgitation of food & acid into throat,cough.
Early in the disease ,ttt is medical as follows:
***General:
-weight reduction.
-avoid alcohol,smoking & some foods[spicy,fatty,caffeine...]& drugs.
-avoid large meals specially before sleep.
-elevating head of the bed.
***Drugs;
decrease gastric acidity:
-Antacid for mild cases e.g glycodal[calcium carbonate + glycine]
-H2 blocker as rantidine[zantac,rantak],antodine.
-proton pump inhibitor e.g omeprazol.
***Regulating motility:
metoclopramide enhance peristalisis & speed gastric emptying.
Domperidone[motilium].
Surgical in selected cases resistant to medical ttt.
BUT IF IT REALLY CAUSED STRICTURE IN THE OESOPHAGUS,you may really need to do repeated oesophageal dilatation.
I hope you won't need that & drugs do with you.
Good luck.

you need to make an appointment with your doctor and get a referral to see someone. It sounds like you need to be on a special diet.
