Hi, well I'm 24 and my first job was when I was 16. A good job in my opinion is a hostess at a restaurant. It shows good people skills, they won't let you work past child labor times...and you can make pretty good money. I loved it. Now, I'm a full time nursing student, I bartend and serve. I just found out that I'm 5 weeks pregnant, so I'm about to have to slow it down, but..... it's fun. (and, I didn't get pregnant by someone I worked with if it makes you feel better) One thing a lot of people don't know is that 16 year olds can't serve at a restaurant where alcohol is served. Where I live in Alabama you have to be 19 to start serving so being a hostess is a great step. Good luck!!!

A lot of people are not too keen on it, but Mc Donalds is a great place for kids to work. They actually offer cash bonuses to kids that get good grades. The higher the GPA the higher the cash bonus. They also offer reimbursment for books for college up to $125. They are also great about working around school schedules, games, dances, etc. I just started working for them on the graveyard shift so hubby can be home with our son, and it is a great place to work. And acutally gas stations require that they be at least 21 because they sell beer.

When I was a teenager, I worked at the local mall at the customer service desk. It was fun and I got to see my friends all the time and I met lots of great people! One of the coolest things about the job was interacting with the security guards and off duty police...I was their dispatch and it could get interesting on the weekends. Good luck to your daughter!

Good day,
Any fastfood restuarant, local grocery store, or some of the stores in the mall. It sounds like your daughter may still be in school so these places usually work with teentagers where they won't be full time workers.

Two of my sons each got their first "real" job at the local public library. It was a good, safe place to work and good experience. Other than fast-food and gas station/convenience stores (which I discouraged my sons from), some good places are movie theaters, after-school child care programs, small manufacturing companies (I've known several students who worked at cabinet makers, saddle shops, etc) and grocery stores.

What is she interested in pursuing after high school? If she is interested in law, call around at law offices and see if they need any mail clerks or office assistants. It's a great way for her to see the field that she's interested in.
Lots of companies will hire part-time help without running an ad.

check your local muncipal job openings. Municipalities often hire young students for a variety of interesting jobs like day camp leaders in the summer, receptionists, etc. McDonalds or other fast food places or video stores/book stores or other retail places are also good first job opportunities.
