11 wives, but reason for marriage was different in thoses days as there were many widows, after a lot of battles. Each of his wives was treated equally. Which could not be done any other man in similar situation.

He had four wives and he treated them with love and respect all equally. At that time it was allowed to have more than wive especially many womens became widows because of their husband death in battles. So it was recomended for a man to marry more than one to take care of the widow, so they do not commit sins.
Hope this clarifies all the ignorant views posted befre mine.

Why does it matter? Many wives was the custom back then. And, ,most of his wives were widows, who had no one to care for them. He married then to show others they were to be honored and worthy of being wives of other men.

Muhammad dosen't need to be a prophet so he can marry as much women as he wants. it was common practice in Arabia.

before becoming a prophet (from age 25 - 40), he remained with one wife who was older than him by 15 years. he remained with her till she died. at his time, it was normal to have as much woman as he wants, but he didn't marry any other women beside her. and the age of 20s & 30s are the most time that a man has a sexual excitment, why then didn't he marry any?
