Perhaps you have run across a requirement that something must be located a given number of pipe diameters downstream or upstream of another object or condition. For instance, a vane type waterflow device should be mounted at least 10 pipe diameters downstream of an elbow.

The pipe diameter mentioned is usually considered to be the nominal internal diameter.

Do you mean one pipe diameter in length?....Like the distance from a pipe intake to the chamber wall?

Pipes are generally sold in 20' lengths and are measured by their interior diameter.
