Birds learn best in the morning, when their mind is fresh and ready for new information. If you use a towel or cover over your bird's cage, talk to them for 1/2 hr before you remove it each morning. Repeat the same phrases loudly, slowly and clearly. Parakeets do best with hard letters like K and T, so the traditional "hello" is actually sort of hard for a Parakeet. "Cutie" would be much better! Parakeets tend to mumble and to talk quickly, so the more slowly you talk, the more normal it will sound when the bird starts to repeat it.

Have patience, and eventually your parakeet will start to answer back to you! Once they get the hang of it, they'll learn more and more quickly as you go. While you can try taping yourself and playing the tape, the parakeet really needs to learn that this is a way for you and it to talk to each other. So it works best if you physically talk to your parakeet, and that you do it often. When you are ready to train your bird, speak clearly and slowly, repeating words. Slowness is important, as parakeets tend to speed up words when they repeat them. Speaking slowly will help make the words sound normal when you hear them. You can also tape-record your voice to play while you're away. However, this can lead to the parakeet only speaking when you're not there. Some CDs are even available to play to birds. This is not as recommended as actually speaking to the bird, as your bird should be aware that this is a human speaking. Some people prefer to use their own voices so that the parakeet can mimic the owner's unique tone of voice. Some parakeets can learn words after two months. Others can take up to six months. After a bird learns a few words, it will take much less time to teach them each word.

You simply repeat the words over to them often. This can take time a patience, but, when you are around them, if you only say one phrase over and over again, they will eventually catch on. You can also buy a mirror that has recording capability. I have seen these at many pet stores that supply bird goods. It has a mirror that you can put on the side of the cage, or inside of the cage. Different brands vary. I have seen ones with prerecorded phrases that say these when the bird goes in front of it or pushes a button. I have also seen them where you record a phrase on with your voice. But both have the same use. The bird seeing 'another bird' 'talking back to it' will immitate the sounds. Hope this helped, and good luck training your pet!

I taught my male to talk and whistle. I sat in a semi-dark room with the bird on my finger. You hold him a foot or two in front of your face and repeat, repeat, repeat... ad nauseum. Do it for about twenty minutes a day, or as long as either of you can take it. One day, when you least expect it, he'll say it and you'll proceed to laugh your butt off! Parakeets won't talk as well as a parrot, but they can really whistle. Good luck.

Warning do not whistle to it first. If the bird learns to whistle(which is more natural), it may never talk. Repetition does wonders. Teach it by habit. Like doing something and saying a word. Say "water" as you change the water, ect. But, budgie-es don't have extensive vocabulary abilities.

Parakeets, like young children, learn by rote. You have to keep repeating the same thing over and over until the bird learns how to say it.

Get a tape recorder and play it over and over and over and over...becuz repetition really is the only way to go. Do not let your bird hear other bird sounds either. If you have two budgies, this is not going to work out becuz they'll just communicate in their own chirpy language 24/7.

Repetition. And be careful with this! Just like a little kid, they will suddenly pick up something you say regularly. It becomes funny when they blend words and it makes nonsense. Like "Merry Hello". Mine did that after Merry Christmas was long done.
