I believe you are thinking of FAO Schwartz. Just reopened after being closed for over a year.
On Fifth Avenue & 58th Streets across from the Plaza and katty-corner from Central Park.

There are 2 big ones in NYC.
FAO Schwarz at the top of 5th avenue,
and Toys R Us in times sq.

FAO Schwartz located on 58th & 5th......right across from "The Plaza' hotel.....and the Paris Theatre.......and just a 2 minute walk to Central Park.

Yes, you mean F.A.O. Schwarz. Wonderful place; has been highlighted in a few movies--my favourite is the floor piano scene from "Big".
