I think it's mostly from news reporters who don't know how to properly report stories like Warren Jeffs, but in my experience, news reporters quite often mix up the facts on a lot of things.

The reason people associate the word Mormon and Utah with Polygamy is because Utah was founded by Polygamist Mormons and there is still a lot of
Polygamist in Utah and there always will be Polygamist in Utah. And not all of them fallow Warren Jeffs in fact the ones that fallow him are a minority. So get over it no matter what you LDS people do you will never be able to get rid of us we are every wear and we own a lot of stuff and do a lot of business, you probably see us every day and don't know it. So like you where saying you should do some fact checking before you use are religion to make your point.

It's reall;y dumb that people still say that. You know the Bible is full of men who had more than one wife and yet people dont assume that all Christians practice polygamy. Who cares anyways. Only an ignorant person would think that Mormons practice polygamy. Jeff Warrens was a nut, and not recognized by the mainstream Mormon church at all. Besides that with over 12 million members of the LDS church, most people know it's not true.

People associate the Mormon church with polygamy because that was part of the church at its founding and some branches of Mormonism still practice it today. I'm guessing most know that mainline Mormons no longer practice that, but a lot of people enjoy egging people on and that's probably the only ammunition they can think of at the time to do that. Sad but true.

It's not really a myth. It's not against the Mormon church to have multiple wives, but the church frowns on the idea today. When the Mormon was founded, they supported the idea of multiple wives in order to prosper. More wives = more kids = more Mormons. Mormons got to be known for polygamy, and the stereotype is still around today.

Do the FLDS stick to authentic Mormon doctrine here? No. We have self assurance in obeying the Lord in all issues -- and definitely one of His commandments has been to stop the prepare of polygamy with the intention to maintain the guidelines of the land. there are a number of adjustments between the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- the mainstream, "widespread" Mormons, as you defined us : ) -- and the FLDS (and the different off-shoots of the unique Church). i'm happy you be attentive to that the two are no longer even a similar religions. If any member of the LDS church is discovered to be working in the direction of polygamy at the instant, they're on the instant excommunicated. It is going against our corporation perception in obedience to the commandments of the Lord whilst and how He provides them. If day after today I awaken and He asks us to soak up the prepare -- or the different prepare -- then i visit achieve this, yet perfect now, it extremely is forbidden, and to marry distinctive different halves (or husbands, for that count) is a severe transgression. wish this helps! : ) P.S. Merry Christmas!!! :D

i have wondered the same thing. I think it just sticks out as something shocking that people remember after hearing it. Also, it makes it easy to make fun of Mormons, so through jokes it spreads. Also, if you think about the term "Mormon," most people think that "Mormon" refers to all sects of Mormonism, which isn't true. It is like assuming that all Christians are catholic, where Catholicism, born again Christians, Lutherans, etc. are all different sects of Christianity so one should not apply all of catholics beliefs on someone that is lutheran...does that make sense? so what happens is that someone who does not know much about Mormonism thinks that all sects of Mormonism are the same, which they aren't. it is also like the mistake of thinking that the Sunni's and the Shiites are the same kind of Muslim. so to conclude my answer, people associate the words Mormon and Utah with polygamy because they a. overgeneralize and b. are ignorant.
I wouldn't take offense or get upset that many people think that all Mormon's are polygamous because who can really say they know all the differences between all the different religions in the world today? It can get confusing.

If that's what you are being taught these days in your young women's classes then either you haven't been listening or they are lying to you.. The Church still holds the doctrine of plural marriage and a saving tenant of their Gospel. After all the 132 section of the D&C is from God Himself, right? Ok the church is outlawed from the pratice of this Law is life but still seal men to more than one woman if a man shouuld lose his wife to death. But in the eyes of the church he is husband to both woman. If a woman loses her husband she can remarry but only for time and at her death goes back to be the wife of her first husband.. The church teaches that God Himself is a polygamist having untold numbers of wives.. This is one more reason why the rest of the christian world sees Mormonism as a cult... Jim

Well I think your point is well taken. But back along time there were some mornons that did practice polgamy but when a certain mornon prophet came along he put a stop to it. Bringham young had many wives. but I don't put noone down for their religious belief. We study with a couple of mormons each week and enjoy it very much. there are few of the doctrines I don't go along with but otherwise they true to the mark. So people shouldn't judge people for what they believe they should let it go. Because God loves us. May God bless and keep you suzie

The fruit of Mormonism is found there. Check the US Census and you will find some interesting things about:
divorce rates
depression in women
teenage suicide
illegitimate births
adultery
incest
violent murders
All of this in a state that promotes "family values".
