My son just took the top of the jack-o-lanturn and started eating it. We just carved it and I put it into the window and sure enough he garbed the lid and started eating it. "Yum this is good" I immedately grabbed it away from him. Will it harm him?

Is it OK for them to eat raw pumpkin? The had a few nibbles last time we carved them, but they seem not to get enough of it. I'm getting ready to carve some more for the weekend and I was wondering if they can have some (seedless, of course).

I know you are supposed to give cats raw pumpkin to entice them to eat if they go on a hunger strike but not sure about dogs though. I would imagine in small quantities it is fine but too much might cause a tummy ache.
Yes - it's okay. Many people routinely give their dogs pumpkin along with their regular food. It's used as a deterent for poop eating too!
If they will eat it raw, I suppose it it fine. I was told to feed Abbi canned pumkin to increase the fiber in her diet. It also has a lot of beta carotene in it. Some individiuals can have a sensitivity to beta carotene, but it is a great anti-oxidant. It is about the same as feeding them carrots.

Abbi doesn't like pumkin, so I had to go to peas. She licks herself so much she gets hair balls and starts this choking cough. I get hre checked for heartworms and then give her more fiber. Presto! The cough disappears. So now I try to add some fiber to her diet once a week or so.

Beaware: It does give them loose bowels on occasion

Pumpkins are part of the squash family, so while pumpkins grown for jack-o-lanterns are not actual pie-eating pumpkins, they would be edible, just not as tasty or tender. Just don't let him near gourds because gourds are poisonous. Pumpkins are very high in beta-carotene, and do have other nutrients and fiber that are good for you. Just make sure he has plenty of fluid so he doesn't become constipated. Maybe he would eat pumpkin soup if he likes raw pumpkin.

Pumpkin guts. Lol. I believe you're referring to the pulp. And yes, it is safe and edible. A pumpkin is a fruit, like apples, tomatoes, watermelons, and bananas. Those fruits are safe 'raw', so I doubt a pumpkin wouldn't be safe raw.

It's probably better for him than whatever his last MEAL was....no kidding.
Raw fruits & veggies are VERY healthy---unless raw sewage is used as fertilizer.

No, it will not harm him. But he might have minor constipation problems. Just have him drink a lot of water and he will be fine.
