You need to rule out that it's not your actual phone unit. Try unplugging in another phone and if you still have static then it's in your lines and can easily be fixed by calling the phone company. It happens all the time.

Could be a number of things, your phone lines could run next to some high voltage but that usually puts a hum on the line.
If you have a cordless phone it could be a number of things.
There could be moisture on the cable that runs from your house to the telephone central office.
If you have a old phone with a handset cord, theres a good chance its the handset cord,(hold the cord still while on the phone if the static seems to not be as loud then wiggle the cord if it sounds like its louder or seems to be more frequent then thats it)
You could have a faulty telephone jack.
Best thing, unplug all phones in the house, test each phone in each jack of the house if there is static on all of them, then its a good chance its the phone companies problem.
If one jack seems to have static on it or phone in perticular replace either one.
An easier way is to go out side your house, there will be a grey box, (usually, although sometimes black) it will have to sides to it. One you will be able to open with a sokcet or plyers. It should have a telephone jack inside of it ( if it is a recent one) Disconect the wire from the screw terminals. Remeber which ones went were. Those wire go to the jacks inside the house. Now there should be a jack inside the box where you can plug a phone into. plug your phone into it and test the line if there is no static the problem lies inside the house. If the is static on the line the problem is either the phone or the telephone companies problem.
Hope that helped and didn't confuse u to bad. Trust me its real easy.

Static in the phone line is usually a short in the wiring or perhaps some moisture.

I would guess either a loose connection or believe it not.. high humidity (like heavy rains) has been known to cause poor sound. the loose connection could be on an outside line, especially if you have had strong winds or bad weather recently.

It's in the connection somewhere.
Take the jack off the wall and check the connections, one's loose I suspect.
Other things that interfere with land lines are microwaves....
Good luck!!
