Why would people be armed with only drums in a warfight?

The drums and drummers are the motivators, the emotional tone setters, the musical instruments best used to mimic the sounds of the ancient human war cries, the sounds of intimidation and resolve, the beat and cadence of a multitude on the march, the exemplars of courage as the unarmed leading the armed down the path of great danger and great honor. They give emphasis to the underlying drama of all war.

To confuse, break morale and intimidate the enemy - the constant drumming was a psychological reminder that an attack was imminent - in other words, prepare to die.

The drummers always went at the back as far as i know, they were intended to intimidate the enemy and make them aware of the oncoming armies presense. If they wanted a sneak attack they wouldn`t have played them. If i heard them i for one would be extremely scared
