I never heard this phrase in my life until the Carlos Mencia show came on Comedy Central. He says it constantly, so I think he considers himself one. Is this like black people calling themselves "THE N WORD" but nobody else can or is it just a harmless nickname or whatever? I am just curious.

It is exactly like black people calling each other the N word. Only other Mexicans can call each other Beaners.

A "beaner" normally is a derogatory name for a person from Mexico. (due to a diet with lots of beans in it) when you say Hispanics you refer to all people of Hispanic heritage, like Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, etc. so that would be the equivalent of calling an Irish person a WOP (term for Italians, stood for waiting on papers, because many were held at Ellis island for so long)

black people will say the "N-word" to each other in terms of endearment or greetings.

mexicans will not call each other "beaner" in any situation.

all other races living around mexicans will often call them beaners behind their back or to identify them.

i wouldnt say its harmless, more harmful than anything.

i wouldnt use the term loosely.

It's just like black people calling each other the N word. It's offensive when anyone of another race uses it though. Call me dumb, but I just don't get it.

Yes. But between friends (Angl-Hispanic) it doesn't seem any worse than calling a pal 'Baldy' or 'Shorty' or a lady 'Toots'.
But their doesn't seem to be any excuse for referring to their issue as 'Bean Sprouts'...unless they are really close friends.

I depends how close you are to the person you are calling it and if you are saying it to be offensive. If you don't usually use slang-then don't.

it's not very nice for anyone to call another such a thing, regardless if they share the same heritage..
