as a beautician i know that constant flat ironing of the hair is very damaging, even with using the ceramic flat irons..this too can damage the hair. If you are going to get a ceramic flat iron make sure that the plates are ceramic and not ceramic coated....this is alot better but with time depending on the fequent use...it to can cause damage

It only ruins your hair if you dont use any products to go with it, try a leave in conditoner or a good quality silkner to go in your hair when flat ironing it. Biosilk is great, Also dont wash your hair every day. Try every other day so that it does not dry out. Make sure you get the ceramic flat iron its a little more expensive but better on your hair then the metal irons.

The most important thing is to use a heat protecting spray on your hair when it's still wet or damp, Nexxus makes a good one and you can get it at the drugstore. If you are going to get a wet to dry iron, get a ceramic one like Remington's (I got mine at Target) and always let your hair air dry a lot first, it's easier to style and gentler on your hair. This iron can be used dry too. You might want to deep condition once a week also, but if you do it this way it shouldn't cause any more damage than a blowdryer. Another thing you can do is give your have a day off from styling on occasion, to keep it healthy.

Flat irons definitely have the potential to destroy your hair. Ceramic ones are better than metal plated ones, but make sure it is truly ceramic (it is not going to be the cheapest) and it is very important to protect your hair too. Buy a heat protectant hair spray or product and you shouldn't straighten it if your hair is wet because it will steam and burn and it hurts your scalp alot! I straighten my hair everyday, a couple times a day actually. My hair is not that damaged, it's mostly from hair dye, but I use Matrix and also Nexxus heat styling sprays, which also help straighten better, besides protecting it.

I use a flat iron on my hair, but I also keep it cut regularly and use the right products with it. That makes a huge difference because it will damage your ends if you don't get a regular cut.

You know what, it probably does damage your hair, but what else doesn't? I flat iron my hair everyday and it looks good and it is still on my head. Get one cause if it makes you look cute, why not? And hair grows back anyways so don't stress unless you go bald... which I highly doubt is going to happen.

it is bad for your hair if you don't use a protective spray first and if the heat is set too high. My stylist said if I condition my hair in the shower, then use a heat-protectant spray before using the flat iron, it will be fine. Oh, use a ceramic plated one.

To tell you the truth yes it is. The iron makes your hair damaged even if it doesn't look like it is, it really is so its a good idea to stick with the straightner.
