I'm a smoker, so that helps a bit. But knowing that I'm going through a panic attack helps a lot by controlling myself, and conciously telling myself that it's all in my head and that the reality of the situation is much smaller than I perceive it to be.

I have panic attacks also. I am currently on Lexapro and Xanax. The Lexapro is taken everyday and takes about 4-6 weeks before the "butterflies" (that anxious feeling in your stomach) leave. The Xanax I take for my panic attacks. I can usually tell off the bat relatively soon after waking up if I need to take one in the morning. If not taken and I do come across a situation that completely overwhelms me I will go into a full blown panic attack with tears and all!! Talk to someone!! There are things out there that will help you and know your not alone and it's not in your head!!

Panic attacks are real and frightening. There are some good relaxation techniques that can help, but medication may be necessary. Just don't self medicate with drugs, alcohol, or pain meds. It becomes a downward cycle. Tell your Dr. You didn't say how old you were, if you're female and menopausal, hormone replacement therapy can help. Good luck.

I dissagree with the person that said it is "just in your head". The problem is more difficult than that. The biological explanation is that your brain neurotrasmiters are messed up. The "spiritual explanation" is that you have a spirit "attached to your aura, and once in a while it tries to get into your body. Your body´s natural protection systems goes on when this spirit tries to get in and that is why you get all your symptoms. To get better try these: medications (prozac, zyprexa, cymbalta) with a doctors recipe, bach flowers (the one´s that help with fear), yoga, breathing techniques, therapy. Other things that help is the sunlight, going to the beach and talking a sea bath, otherwise by sea salt, mix it with honey and take a bath at home. Turn on candles and music. To scare the spirit. You are not alone. (If you want contact me to Argentox2@yahoo.com)

Diet and excerise helped mine. I'm not an advocate of healthy eating and exercise 9 days a week by no means - i just found that cutting caffeine from my diet, adding in some fresh fruits/veggies and walking some has helped. When i feel one coming on, i will try and do some walking or aerobics or something to distract my mind. I found that a nice hot bubble bath helps to relax me when i can't fight one off. Good luck! :)

Good luck trying without medication. I guess you could do breathing exercises (inhale four seconds, hold it for half a second, exhale four seconds). Take a bath..
For me I was prescribed Xanax for short term and Paxil for long term. However, what really made the difference for me is taking Concerta (adhd med). So if you have any underlying health conditions, treat those as well and anxiety should improve.

Run in my family, but I've only had a few.
Breathe! Knowing it's all in your head helps.
Then,
please make sure you get tested by a real doctor. Hopefulyl a psychiatrist. They found my thyroid problem. The anxiety and the attacks stopped!
Now life is still stressful, but the relief is great.
Misdiagnosis is common. Make sure you get a real doctor!
