green chili are called Anaheim chili. They are longer and flat. You have to roast them and peal them. Then cut them up.
Don't waist your time..Just go get the canned pealed ones.
Don't use Jalapenos. They are totally different. It would be like using cabbage instead of lettuce. YUUUK!!!
If you can find them try and get Hatch Anaheim Chilies. They are the best. They are in season right now. You should be able to find them in the stores now.

RE:
What's the difference between jalapenos and green chile peppers?
I have a recipe that calls for chopped green chile peppers. I have bought green chili peppers canned before. Buy am I suppose to buy them fresh and chop them up? I don't think I have ever seen them in the fresh vegetable section of the grocery store. Only jalapenos. Can I use them instead?...

Fresh green or red ripe (Chili Colorado) or dried red (usually called California), 6" to 11" by 2", H2. These mild and mild flavored chilis may be sold as "Long Green Chili" and are similar to New Mexico and other chilis that fit that description. Fresh green, H6. This is our "standard" for hot green chilis. It is hot on just about anyone's scale, is widely available and reasonably reliable as to how hot it actually is, and has been adopted by many immigrant communities. The Serrano has a distinctive flavor, moderately thick flesh and generally is between 2" and 3" long by 1/2" in diameter with a rounded point. Thai restaurants adopted Serranos for their condiment trays in the days before California had geared up for Thai chilis, and people became so used to their flavor some Thai restaurants now provide both Serrano and Thai chilis. Their prominent place in Indian groceries indicates the Indian community has adopted them as well. Mexicans use Serranos wherever Jalapenos just aren't hot enough to do the job. They also put up cans of pickled Serranos in the same manner as Jalapenos, but I consider pickled Serranos just a bit too hot to enjoy munching on.

jalapeno peppers have some heat to them, whereas green (usually anaheim or hatch) chiles are usually milder. if you buy canned green chiles, they should be labeled as mild, med, hot. for fresh peppers, a good rule of thumb is the smaller the pepper, the hotter it is. large bell peppers are mild, followed by green chiles, poblanos, jalapenos, serranos, and habaneros. keep in mind that you can keep the flavor, and reduce (not remove) the heat of most peppers by wearing gloves, and using a paring knife or spoon to scrape out the seeds and vein that runs inside the pepper.

Jalapenos are chili peppers, as are all other members of the Capsicum family. The several types vary in 'hotness' with the bell pepper being the least hot and habanero being the top of the scale, at least those that are available in your local supermart.
Here's a link that can help you decide what type of chili to use:

They taste different. You can absolutely use either - depends on you taste / heat preference. Nothing better than a good fresh Jalapeno!! Except maybe fresh roasted / hot off the grill green chili.
