I have checked the Lehner's encyclopedia and it names two companies that used a crescent moon marking and one that uses a cescent and star but both crescent marks have the company names in them so they would be easily identified. My guide is for U.S. pottery marks only so the piece was probably made outside America.
Researching porcelain markings can be difficult as there have been so many manufacturers throughout history.
Here are some links to get you started, good luck...

Is there a mark stamped or printed on the bottom? There are books where you can look up the manufacturer's marks. An antique dealer could probably look it up for you, but you would be better off finding out for yourself, just in case its valuable and the dealer isn't quite as honest as you'd like.

You should contact a local antiques dealer. They'll have the information you need or be able to put you in touch with the people that do.
