I picked up a rescue dog from an animal shetler yesterday, they said he was a Polish Lowland Sheepdog. I find it hard to beleive that a dog of they type was not claimed at the shelter and was wondering if anyone could help me verify what type of breed this is. He is darling, shaggy and has a wonderful personality. Is approx 1 year old, has long beige/white hair with a soft undercoat and a purple tongue!!!! he is about 20 nches high. I have pictures that i can send for verification.

Thank you all for your answers they were enlighting. I did not get this dog because of his breed i got him because he looks ecactly like a minature sheep dog. There does not seem to be a way to post a picture on this site. or if there is tell me how and i will do it. i have several. Anyway, the shelter had the help from petfriends and that is what they thought. You are right about some breed types they use, but this time i think they were close in the description anyway.

sounds like a chow-chow and sheepdog mix. Chow-chow i think is the only breed with a purple tongue

This is a pretty rare breed, I find it unlikely that it would turn up unclaimed at a shelter. I do know that shelter staff can be pretty creative when deciding on a dog's breed, I've seen some doozies. We had a cute terrier mix come into our grooming shop, the local pound had told them it was a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. Right.......

Here is the website for the American Polish Lowland Sheepdog Club. I'd suggest looking at the pictures on the site and maybe sending them your pictures to evaluate. Better yet, if you can find a breeder near you you can show them your dog and they should be able to tell you if that's what you have.

If the dog does come from a good breeder and ended up in the pound, they will be relieved to know that he is now in a good home.

Enjoy your new dogs, whatever he is!

Sounds close...but most likely a mix breed. Any time a stray comes in the shelter makes their best guess don't take their guess to be fact. Typically (though not always) a black/purple toung (especially if it is a solid color) indicates the dogs has some chow chow or shar-pei in it. You really need to post pics, but it will still be guessing.

He may more likely be a mix of Old English Sheepdog: http://www.akc.org/breeds/old_english_sheepdog/index.cfm or Bearded Collie: http://www.akc.org/breeds/bearded_collie/index.cfm as these breeds are more common than Polish Lowlands: http://www.akc.org/breeds/polish_lowland_sheepdog/index.cfm which are fairly rare. A part of his mix may be Chow Chow: http://www.akc.org/breeds/chow_chow/index.cfm or Shar Pei: http://www.akc.org/breeds/chinese_shar_pei/index.cfm as these are the two breeds that have purple tongues.

Only the Shar Pei and Chows have solid purple tongues, many other breeds can have purple or black spot on their tongue. So if he has an all purple tongue, it would be a shar - pei or chow mixed with another breed.

That is funny because we do that at our animal shelter...it is called "What breed is it!!". We get things that RESEMBLE some purebred cat or dog and call it that, or a mix of that. It gets them adopted faster. Frankly, unless it comes with the papers, there is NO proof it is ANY breed.

It is true that they will give the dog a "breed" to get it adopted. See it all the time!!!!!!!!!
