Taking a dog to a vet should NEVER be a last resort. People here can give you opinions, but that's all they are -- opinions. And that includes me.
What my vet usually recommends is to take the dog off all solid food for a day. Make sure that they have plenty of water and are drinking. If not, you need to take the dog in right away before it becomes dehydrated.
Then boil hamburger and make instant rice. Mix in equal quantities, and feed your dog several small meals of the mix, having warmed it slightly to take the chill off. Continue this for the next two days, and if he seems to be all right, then slowly add his regular food to the hamburger over the next two days until he's back to his regular diet.
Before you do this, though, PLEASE call your vet for an OK. This is only meant for the average upset tummy and diarrhea that dogs sometimes get. If your dog is running a fever, is lethargic, vomiting, or other serious signs, he's probably too sick to wait for the home remedy. And if money is an issue, most vets will work with you on a payment plan.

Hey there! I am very familiar with how to keep a dog hydrated and get a puppy over stomach issues. We just went through a similar situation with our puppy. Even if your dog does not have a major illness like Parvo or Coccidia, please keep reading...as the information I have will help for a dog that is having tummy issues. (Parvo and Coccidia affect the digestive tract, so the remedies are alike when going herbal)
My dog was diagnosed by my vet friend as having Parvo. He was checked and he hasn't had any immunizations add his symptoms and it was called as Parvo. We later found out that he had a secondary infection called Toxcidia or Cocidia ( Coccidiosis ) . Which I have also, unfortunately, become very familiar with. And he also had a really bad case of worms.
In any case, the most important thing is to keep him hydrated. And if you can, give him something that will calm his stomach. (This will help him keep the water down as well).
Visit this website and look at the Parvo information booklet, it has info in there on how to keep a sick dog hydrated. Including a recipe for some herbal tea that will work to settle the stomach, provide vitamins and hydration (it contains electrolyte solution like pedialyte ). My vet friend wasn't big on this stuff, but it settled my dogs stomach better than the anti-nausea and anti-diarreal shot she gave him and kept him alive and hydrated for a few days. (He's still alive and doing PERFECTLY now!) http://www.ambertech.com/whatisp.php
This website does sell products, but they really are great about caring for animals and owners first! Also another website is included with similar information and the BEST people out there.

Pepto may help dogs as well, it is on the list of items to have on hand on this website. I'm not sure on the dosage nor the complications of giving the dog Pepto.
Of course, I have to say that taking your dog to the vet is the most PC and safe thing to say or do. But if you need to try some alternative way of keeping the dog from puking and keep it hydrated...this would be a great way to go! It worked for us, for hydration, settling the stomach, diarreah and beyond.
Good luck
I hope this has been helpful

If your dog isn't better in a day or two, then go for the "last resort". You can always call the vet too, and just ask them or the vet tech a question over the phone.
My dog had giardia once, and if we hadn't gone to the vet, he could have died. If you're going to own a pet, you have to be able to finacially support it, and that includes vet bills, I'm sorry to say.

Don't feed him for a day (sounds harsh but its better than having an upset stomach all day and being stressed about going to the bathrooom all over the floor). If he continues to get it the next day you need to take him to the vet. Also if you just switched foods or trets, etc. this happens, so stick with the same stuff and if you are going to a switch do it gradually mixing the old food and the new food.

when my dog became sick with diarhea the vet recommended a bland diet of boiled chicken and boiled rice. Don't let him gulp water. You can give him ice cubes instead. I also got barium from the vet it was only $10. It's like peptobismal for dogs. You can actually give your dog human pepto if you can't get barium. Keep a close eye on his progress, if there is blood in his diarhea it can be very serious. My dog died from this. You can also call a vet they will give you free advice on the phone.

sweetie, when you become a pet owner, you become the full time caregiver for another life who is depending on you. your dog's health should never be a last resort. please find a way to get him to the vet, especially if this has been going on for more than ONE day! your little dog could become dehydrated and get much worse.
be a responsible pet owner...consult your vet...at the VERY LEAST, CALL THE VET.

You should give the dog only liquids for an entire day... Afterwards, introduce ONLY dry foods. If he's getting better than he can be given his usual food.
