Press gently near the stalk, if it gives slightly it is ripe. Watermelons don't give. Hold it to your ear and knock on it with a knuckle, a deep hollow sound means it is ripe.

You check melons by taping and smelling. Cantaloupes need to smell sweet. If they feel too soft -- leave it alone, don't buy it. Firm to the touch, hollow sounding and smells good.

If your talking about the fruit you buy at supermarkets then press the rounder end where the stalk connected. If its soft its ripe.
