Prayer is battle a lot of the time. Some battles are over the minute I release a prayer, and it's done. That enemy is down. Sometimes it takes a fight that goes for a while to take an enemy out. The Bible says we ought always to watch and pray, but sometimes we neglect our watch, we fall asleep on our watch, or we get distracted in the heat of the battle. Sometimes disobedience to the Word of God leaves us vulnerable in the fight. If I let doubt start to creep in and don't deal with as an enemy to take out, then I leave myself open. As soon as something like that happens we leave the situation we're fighting for vulnerable to the thief that comes to kill, to steal, and to destroy (John 10:10).
If I was praying for 2 separate people and 1 of them finds themselves in an situation where their life is threatened, and I'm off somewhere slacking not even watching in the Spirit when that person needs someone's prayers prevailing in his or her behalf, then this is one possible explanation. Or maybe I wasn't praying effectually. The Word of God says that the effectual prayer of a rigtheous man avails much. If my prayers aren't prevailing, then it's prudent on my part to look into seeing if there is a lack either with my righteousness or my effectualness in prayer. These are also possible explanations.
Faith is not presumption. Faith isn't lazy either. Faith does what the word of God says. If the Word of God is saying watch and pray, the faith is watching and praying. The question that Jesus asked more than once in the Gospels was who would be participating with faith?

God will never forsake you.You can pray, but remember God is holy.He is a jealous God when it comes to his children. If your friend was saved and believed in Jesus. Then he was needed in Heaven more than he was needed here on earth.Just because there is a war don't think for a second that God is commanding every bullet fired on the battlefield.
Ever been in a firefight(especially when your gun jams with sand and burnt gun powder). You learn right quick who is in control, and it's not man.

There is a much much bigger picture than the life of any one of God's children. Each of us has a part in this big picture. When my brother was killed, my parents changed almost overnight into much better people. God works in mysterious ways, but always there's a plan. And I kind of think that our Guardian Angels may be nearby to help us sometimes, but other times they are with other people helping them.

The sad fact is, the joke's on him. Of course, the religious types will argue that it was part of some mystical plan for the universe. Or worse, that he had committed some sin and got what he deserved. Whatever nonsense they can think up to justify the unjustifiable.

God's ways are not our ways. We cannot know the "whys" of everything with regard to why things happen. All we can do is trust that He is perfect in all His ways, including the ones we don't understand.
And, a P.S. God promises to His children that He will never leave nor abandon them.

God's plan for your friends life was met ... maybe. However, he did answer your friends' prayer the very best way for him.

Ask and you shall recieve. AN ANSWER THAT IS. Obviously it means G-d said no. Also one must have undying faith. That's always a plus. A major one at that.

It means prayer doesn't work. I hope you're not asking because of a personal experience. If you are, I'm sorry for your loss.
