My friend would like a dog, but would like a quiet one since her next-doors complain a lot about other dogs. I never bothered to check out this information extensively since this has never been a problem for me. Size is not an issue in this matter, and neither is money.

Sighthounds in general are very quiet. My Whippets hardley ever bark and most other Sighthounds are the same.

I would stay away from Toys, many Herding, most Terriers, and all scenthounds.

BTW - Basenjis don't bark, but they do make this loud moaning sound.

Well all dogs bark a little bit, but there are some breeds that just seem to do it less than others. Our Border Collie isn't much of a yappy kind of dog really. She does on occasion, if she sees a squirrel, but typically she's rather quiet. Not sure if I got lucky, but I think the breed tends not to be a yappy kind. They are about a medium sized dog, too. Friendly, good natured, but also require a lot of excercise and attention. They can bore easily which can result in destructive behavior. Just something to keep in mind if you are considering the breed. An active BC is a happy BC.

I would suggest adopting an adult dog. That way you get a feel for its personality. All dogs bark (except for basengies, but they can make some other annoying noises) and it just depends on the personality of the dog as to how often/easily they start. Adopting an adult dog will give you a pretty good idea of their personality and how much they will be carrying on. You can tell the shelter yourre friends predicament and they should be more than willing to find a good match. If I were to generalize breeds (which I dont like doing) I would say toy dogs, herding dogs, hounds and terriers, tend to be bigger barkers than sporting, non sporting and working breeds and mixes of these. Good Luck

Boxers are a fairly quiet dog. They have a "judicious bark". Mine only barks when someone rings the door bell or knocks on the door. Even then, he quiets down as soon as I go to the door. They can be large and require a lot of play time and exercise, but are extremely loving companions. Check out a Boxer Rescue in your area (you can google "Boxer Rescue" to find them), their Boxers are usually mature dogs that have been surrendered by their previous owner and have been socialized with other dogs as well as updated on all vaccines, and are spayed/neutered before placed in a home. Boxer Rescues usually require a fenced yard, I don't know your friend's living arrangements, but they are worth a look. Plus, she'd be helping a homeless dog!

You might want to provide a little more information. I personally have a preference for huskies but they are very hard to keep fenced in and are more human than dog. I have two huskies and both are very quiet. If it wasn't for them visiting our neighbours they would not even know we had them. They do get vocal when they require something, like the treat box closer to the floor or to be let out. But they do not tend to bark, usually it is a low howl that would not even wake up someone in the next room.

Basenjis are "barkless" dogs, they do whoever make other doggy noises. I would tell them to stay away from toy breeds, terriors, high energy and guard dog breeds. They are all know for their barking. I find the hunting breeds, like labs and quite, but then that all depends on the amount of exrecize they are willing to give the dog.

There is a breed of dog called a basenji, it doesn't bark. It has a short coat. My sister has a basenji cross (i'm not sure what it's crossed with) but the fur is very short, and soft. My sister's barks though.
