Automatic writing can be a useful tool to get in touch with your higher self, angels, guides and other spirits. It can also open up a connection to things you don't want to be connected to. It is important to set up your intention before starting any automatic writing or other method to get in contact with entities that are outside of yourself. The intention can be as simple as "I would like to only be in contact with my angels, guides, God, higher self and only receive that information that is for my highest and greatest good. I ask that I be protected from all that is not of my highest and greatest good."
Some easy steps to follow for automatic writing are:
1. State your intention
2. If you have a question you would like answered, write it at the top of the page. Otherwise write out the name of the entity or your higher self, etc. that you are wanting to get in contact with.
3. Allow yourself to fall into a meditative state - where your mind is quiet, without thought or attachment to the outcome of the exercise. This may take some time and practice, but you can do it.
4. Begin moving your pen or pencil on the paper - sometimes in loops helps to get the ball rolling.
5. Just allow whatever words, symbols, drawings to come forth, do not doubt, criticize or try to understand them until you are finished with the writing.
6. Allow the pen to flow until you feel whatever answer is complete and the dialogue is finished.
7. Thank whoever you asked for coming forward to give you guidance and close out the writing session.
8. Take time to read through what has been given to you, at this time it would be wise to see if feels like truth, of your highest good, makes some sense, etc. If it does not feel like truth, be sure to discard it and let it go. Only hold onto what you feel in your heart is of your highest good.
I have had some success with this method when working with angels and have posted some of the letters I received in my blog. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about using this method.

I do a variant called automatic typing.
1. Get comfortable at your computer.
2. Open Notepad/Word/SciTE/Editor of your choice.
3. Close your eyes and tilt your head to one side slightly, so that it's comfortable.
4. Begin to type EVERY word that enters your mind. Pay no attention to typos or bad or missing punctuation.
At some point, you will likely begin to feel dizzy. Do not panic, this is your mind starting to enter a trance psychology. You will start to be aware of the MOMENT. But every moment that you are aware, simply type every word that comes into your mind. You will likely lose sense of time -- again, don't panic, this is a normal psychological response to this type of trance. You may feel disconnected and dissociated from reality -- these are simply the periods where you are beyond using your conscious mind to type. At some point of awareness, just decide to stop and open your eyes, this will break the trance state entirely, though you may remain groggy or dizzy.
There are different opinions on if you should read what you've written, and if so, when. Some say you should not read it at all, that the purpose of the exercise is to empty your subconscious mind of its thoughts so that you are free to act more fully consciously. Some say you should set it aside and read it only after resting, either a nap, night's sleep, or a short walk. Others read it immediately.
If you read something that scares you -- remember: YOU typed it. It was not a demon or a spirit, it was just an altered brainstate of yourself. Relax and simply don't do the exercise again.
The first time I tried this, I broke trance and read what I had typed and what really got me was that there was a part where I had typed, "This this [typo intentional] is for JP John-Paul whatever the f*** he is called when he gets back". Shortly after, there was a mishmash of words that said something to the effect of enjoy the sweet pastry crust but beware the dark sugary shapes below.
I didn't do it again for a week. :)
Now I do it regularly simply because it's a source of creativity for me.
You should *NOT* do autowriting or auto-typing if you are a Jew, Christian, or Muslim. This process, while clearly defined by psychology as a form of ideomotor control, is viewed in those religions as being part of divination or witchcraft. This may set up a situation that because you believe what you are doing to be evil, what you express may be particularly disturbing -- akin to taking a hallucinogen and then having a bad trip because you're in a lousy mood.
Otherwise, give it a try, if you like it or enjoy it, cool, if not, also cool, still worth the experience in my book.
