Everyone started on Ellis island thats where the statue of liberty is from there you could catch a boat to Boston or New York that is why the East Coast has a larger Italian and Irish population than the west coast.

Most of them stayed in New York, but a lot spread to other large cities like Boston, Philly, Chicago and others.
