I believe in Jesus, in His Gospel, and in the value of Christianity. Even in if all turns out to be a myth, I am glad that i am a Catholic. The values intrinsic to the Gospel are GOOD values to live by. The seven sacraments are basically rituals of initiation and transition. The power of symbol and ritual on the human psyche is well-documented. The graces & virtues petitioned are ones worth having. The theme of death & resurrection is encountered everywhere: just look at the turning of the seasons. I know that that theme is prevalent in many ancient religions: it obviously addresses a need in the mind/subconcious of human beings.
I know very few fearful Christians - I mean, people who are Christian simply because they fear hell. The Christians I know are Christian because the Gospel has made a difference in there lives, in the way they live. Christianity is a good way of life. Why hate it?

several people have misread or misinterpreted the question. I am not concerned with the validity of certain beliefs here, nor am I saying that i need anything to tell me I'm a good person. I am merely considering the "philosophy" of Christianity: that the lifestyle it presents is a good way to live.
It is incredibly said that people have "told me what i believe" when it's obvious they've not darkened the door of a church (a Catholic one, anyway) in a very long time.
A basic ignorance of history (Ecclesial and European) is also betrayed by statements involving the Inquisition, which was primarily a political construction, using religion for its own dirty purposes (where have we seen that recently?).
People can keep their sympathies. I am happy in life. Again, what of the ideas of the Gospel values? The theory of Christianity: why hate it?

because of the actions of the people who follow it--because these people block medical procedures and harass minorities--because the people who follow it use it as an excuse to justify prejudices that are keeping people from being treated fairly, and most of all, because they won't leave us alone to believe what we want to believe in

First off, it isn't a myth, couldn't be. Jesus was recognized as Deity in His lifetime, He never disputed it. The resurrection was proclaimed with a year of the event. There would have been ample opportunity for the Jewish leaders to refute this, just bring out the corpse of Jesus and Christianity is crushed in its embryo state, didn't happen. Myths develop over many, many years, long after those who were witnesses to the events or the person are long gone, this is not true of Christianity.
The Gospel of Christ is often misunderstood. It is the Gospel or good news of salvation from our sins through the death and resurrection of Christ. The really good news is that it is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. The work was finished on the cross, we no longer have to do anything or work for our salvation, it is done, completely. We, the elect, are freed from the worry about whether we are saved or if we have done enough to appease God. The work of salvation is completed, nothing more needs to be done.

It's important to learn not to judge people by their religious beliefs or doctrines if you're really a christian. For all you know how you react to these people is really how you are tested. So, it would seem it's about self control and personal values and setting an example of a christian and not making an example of others. So many people turn it into something political instead of moral.

I think its fair to say, that you can convince yourself of anything, if you want to believe in it. If you feel you have something missing in your life and you find a belief which fulfils it and brings you joy, then so long as it is not causing pain to anyone else, then whats the problem? People get very upset when you tell them that what they believe in is wrong, they have every right to. NOBODY is qualified to tell us that what we believe in is wrong. I believe in God, I believe in Love, that is my choice! As for the Bible? well nobody really knows, because if they did... then there simply would not be all this fuss/belief/non belief etc! Because everyone would just know! So why cant we all just live and let live in love, harmony and mutual respect!!!

I have been a Christian since 1978. I share my house with Christians, I work with Christians. We aim to live according to the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Apostles. We care for one another and support one another. We share one anothers joys and sorrows. We are a community based on love. It is a good way to live.
Ernest S, you misquote. Paul is saying that if our faith in Christ is only good for this life we are to be pitied. But our hope is in Life Eternal, so we rejoice. Try reading the whole chapter next time.

The reason for hating it is simply that Christians, especially Catholics, take great pleasure in imposing their belief system on others, often quite brutally, as in, for instance, The Inquisition.
And these beliefs are far from sane: Transubstantian, virgin births, resurrections of the dead, etc.
I must add that I have never found Christians to be nicer people than any other group.

So sad that you need a pile of fiction to tell you that you are a good person. The church needs you to believe that.

People hate it because Jesus said while on earth:
The world will hate you because it hated me before you!
People think that Christians believe they are better than anybody else but if only they knew - if anything a true Christian sees what he/she is in the eyes of God and that should humble them!
