I'd have to agree largley with the response from Steve L, however, in my opinion, Hunter Rest is by far the best.
I have found The Globe to be too processed, in that the food is of a very standard menu and bulk dealt with.
The Carpenters Arms is very small, as is the menu, so you may struggle if you are planning on taking more than 4 people.
The Hunter Rest has plenty of dining space, the menu is large, and the food is all home-made to order. They also have a very interesting feature in the female toilets (but I won't ruin the surprise).

While I am from the U.S., I have friends from London who sent me the following site with ratings for Bristol and Bath restaurants. They say it serves as a wonderful guide! Good luck and a VERY happy 40th Birthday!

Liverpool has more grade one listed buildings, art galleries and museums then any city in the Uk outside of London. We also have the Tate North. The city centre is full of traditional pubs, and pub crawls are a part of the weekend drinking scene. FACT the foundation for art and creative technology is in Wood St is world renowned for its video and interactive displays, it also has 3 cinemas, showing art house films. Liverpool One is now fully open, and is basically a whole modern new city centre, with all the shops you could ever want.
