Gout, which is a form of arthritis, can cause severe swelling and pain in the feet; sometimes so much, that simple tasks such as walking or even putting on your shoes can be excrutiating. Beer, or wine can sometimes cause bad flare-ups. I would suggest going to your doctor, and getting more information on gout. You may have to change your diet.
Cranberry juice (and lots of it) or celery seed can sometimes minimize your flare-ups.
