Some cats go outside to go too. I had a cat that hated the litter box and would only go in the litter if it was -30 degrees.
Also some people teach their small dogs to go on paper in their house so they don't have to walk them as often. Not recommended but it is done.

I have 6 cats all together. There are 2 that stay in all the time hardly ever go out. They use the litter box but the other 4 that go out a lot go out and use the bathroom. I never taught them they just do this.

They have that instinct to cover their pee/poo and typically will go only where that can be done. Most cats will go inside or out. I think some indoor cats feel vulnerable when they are squatting down outside - they can be easily be ambushed by another animal. So they choose to come inside and use the litterbox instead. Dogs go outside because they are taught to. Thank god!

My neighbors cat is always using my bushes as her litterbox....
Cats should not be left outside, they will not stay in a fenced yard, like a dog. And are then in danger of larger animals, cars, and are exposed to more diseases. So thats why they have a litterbox.

.well I think they would if most of us would let them' but they would jump the fence and get ran over by a car.'you can train them to walk on a leash if you start with them when their kitten's THINK ITS JUST EASIER for us just to get a litter box. wish dogs would use a litter box' maybe they won't because they wouldn't get to go for walks anymore' ha ha

My cat goes potty outside. It waits for me to let it out and goes to the same spot everyday. If I don't let it out it will let me know for sure it wants out. It depends on if it is an indoor cat or one you let out regularly.
