Bound's hubby here:
I have 2 M1911A1s, a Colt MkIV Series 70 Government Model, and a Springfield Armory Trophy Match. I think the newer Springfield's are superior to the later manufactured Colt's.
I am actually considering the Springfield GI as my retirement carry pistol. I am ecstatic with Springfield's customer service and they make a great product. Your GI or Mil Spec will also serve as a great "chasis" when you want to "improve" your .45. Many of the Springfield's that are more pricey are more specialty pistols, not exactly entry level pistols.
The GI and Mil-Spec are not target guns, expect GI accuracy, maybe 6" groups at 25 yards. If you tendencies lean to target shooting, look at a Trophy Match.
I would strongly suggest you look at a conversion kit for your 1911A1, so you can shoot .22s. You will still have and use the same trigger mechanism, but shooting more affordable .22LR shells.

Since the question states that you are looking to buy a 1911 in .45acp, then I'll agree with the others in saying that you'll do just fine with the Springfield.
That said, and in realizing that this will be your first handgun, and also noting that you are a "basic shooter, shoot for fun only", I would suggest that you look at a .22 for your first handgun. If you are set on the feel and look of a 1911, you can go with one of the .22 versions on that frame. There are a few manufacturers that make a .22 version of their 1911s. Here's a better thought.....Ruger makes a version of their wildly successful .22 with a frame that is exactly like a 1911, called the 22/45 Mark III. A .22 as a first handgun is a wise choice for many reasons; you'll spend a lot less for ammo, the firearm will be much more accurate "out of the box" than a standard .45, and you will not have any errors in your form hidden by the recoil, so by the time you do decide to buy a 1911 (and you will) you will be a much more proficient shooter with it. I'll attach a link to the Ruger web site so you can see what that pistol looks like.

The Springfield's 1911 is a fine pistol and a good choice if you want to have a 1911 type pistol. I have nine 1911's mostly Colts, and I love these guns.
But, I 100% agree with "scoober23" that if this is going to be your first pistol, the 1911 is not the best choice. Now, if you have an experienced 1911 shooter to teach you, then by all means get one. If not, please take scoober23's advice.

i purchased a "1911 loaded parkerized", replaced the stupid practise guide rod that needs an Allen key for $30 for an Ed brown one, and shot (and received) some IDPA. considering that then a lot more effective stuff has been replaced with Wilson/EB. i appreciate my loaded type, comes with beaver tail, the front serrations, skeletonized hammer and set off, ambi protection, and some trijicon evening points of interest. then you definitely can upload/replace notwithstanding you want from there. besides, now to not bash or flame all and assorted, yet light-weight frames can change into battered after 10thousand or so rounds, so i'd you recommend on capturing a lot, then evaluate that. yet light-weight frames are large if you happen to carry a lot and easily shoot a real looking volume.

GOOD CHOICE.The 1911 is probably the best COMBAT handgun of all time. Its not the most powerful,or the most expensive, but you will have a lot of fun shooting it.I own a lot of handguns &my Colt Combat Commander,in .45ACP is my favorite. The springfields are still MADE in U.S.A. Rock On

Definately a good choice. If I may make 1 suggestion, go with a target model ( mine has accurized barrel, ajustable sights, and lighter trigger pull.) It is more expensive but it saves you if you put these on later ( $900 or $1500...hmmm)

good choice on that weapon, you used your head on this, by starting out with a known quality, and caliber,
that weapon had put many of other countries down and help defend America.
when you decide for an upgrade, you have a weapon than will accept many, money is the only object
