I'm American and I'd like to surprise my British boyfriend with a traditional English breakfast. I realize that British bacon is completely different from American-style bacon--so I was wondering...is British bacon the same (or close enough) to the stuff Americans refer to as Canadian Bacon? Any British expatriates now residing in the US out there who can enlighten me? Thanks for the help!

No. Bacon is cured differently than ham. Plus bacon can come from any part of a pig, or steer, or any animal... a hock is actually the knuckle, while the ham is the more muscular part of the leg. You can cook with a hock the same way you'd cook with ham though, you'll just have less fat and more meat, proportionally.
