I want to know if anyone knows what they're talking about besides me. I see alot of Satanism = evil kind of things. Why do people think it's evil?

I have read the Satanic Bible. & there is nothing evil about it. It simply says that indulgence is better than abstinence. (to put it in simplest terms)

Well it's not a bunch of people in black robes bowing to a horned figure, screaming "praise lucifer!" That's the silliest thing I've ever heard and I have only ever known teenagers to do it for shock value.
But, it's easily understood why people think it's evil. Anton Le Vay did that on purpose. He didn't believe in an evil entity called Satan... he certainly didn't adhere to Christianity, but used the whole "Church of Satan" as a means to oppose what Extreme Christianity stood for. So obviously it's going to be viewed as evil by Christianity. Personally I thought the whole hedonistic idea that one can do whatever they want so long as it feels good (which he actually took from Crowley... his are, by far, NOT original ideas) was a tad much. Though the humanistic side of it isn't so bad, if one is inclined to join something like that just for the shock value alone.
Now, not saying Satanists are in it only for the shock value... I know a few who aren't... but then, they didn't announce they were Satanists either. It wasn't till almost 2 yrs after knowing them that the subject even came up and even then they didn't go into great detail about what they believed about it... outside of letting me know they don't sacrifice animals or people, they don't bow down to satan, they don't go out with the intent of doing harm to others... Mostly, they're just tired of the extreme Christian BS they run into all the time. And on that point, I can't say I blame em.

Because LaVey didn't do himself or his followers any favors by using the term "Satanism". The momentary satisfaction he may have gained with the "Up yours, Christians!" name has been outweighed, IMHO, by the fact that it gives people the wrong idea of the philosophy right off the bat.
If you're not going to profess a belief in an independent deity, don't name your philosophy after an independent deity from someone else's religion. Or at least don't get your nose out of joint when people assume that by calling yourself a "Satanist" that you worship the Judeo-Christian concept of an independent entity known as "Satan"... (as opposed to the symbolic traits that "satan" embodies).

Satanism is another religion considered EVIL by other religions, the teachings of its origin from various religous sects denounce that it has any truth.
This standpoint is contradictory if they believe in a heaven, hell, good, bad, right, wrong understanding.

I think it has more to do with children being rebellious and stupid than Satan. Still the praise given to the evil one makes it evil... Jim

Some actually believe in god vs. devil ; others use it to 'be opposite' to the hypocrisy that is christianity. Look up Lavey or churchofsanta website.....i don't think that they believe in 'good or evil' forces. They are basically atheists who became tired of the old Christian life. Thats what I think.

When they hear Satanism, people just naturally assume you worship Satan. Unlike alot of people, I'm happy to be smart enough to understand that Satanism =/= devil worship.

I did read up on it recently, so I have a pretty good understanding of what it's about.
Those who believe that it's evil - in the biblical sense - believe that because it's not of god. And anything not of god is therefore evil.
My own opinions are of little import.

People think it's evil because they are too lazy to learn anything about it, and because it has the name "Satan" in it.

Satanist don't worship Satan. They do not believe in Satan nor do they sacrafice humans. They follow what they feel is true human nature.
