I live near a packing plant and can purchase beef to be processed for 80 cents/ lb. I can get the whole beef or just half of it. The beef is 50 cent/ lb and 30 cents/lb for processing. You can call National Beef Packing Company in Dodge City, Kansas to check on current prices. the number is (620) 227-7135. Just call them and ask about purchasing half a beef or the whole beef. they do sell them this way. Actually, the cow you buy this way is one that got injured during shipping and cannot make it into the packing plant under its own power (it usually has a broken leg ) the packing plant can't sell it the normal way, so they sell them for 80 cents/ lb including the processing. As far as what beef usually cost- if you buy it ready to be slaughtered its a different price than if you buy feeder cattle. feeders are ones that need fattened up, slaughter cows are ones ready to be slaughtered. any kind of beef is good for eating- it just depends on how you cook the portion of beef.

Alot of the cost would depend on the age of the animal you are buying. Some meat processors will let you just buy the meat by the half, or you can take your own cow into the facility for the plant to slaughter it for you. You should contact your local cooperative extension office to find out where there are state inspected meat facilities that can do custom slaughter for you. I'm not sure what you mean by "what ways can you have a cow slaughtered", but you can specify what cuts you want from the animal, like if you want all steaks, steaks and roasts, ground meat, cubed steak, etc. Cost of course varies greatly.
If you do buy a cow for slaughter, make sure it is healthy, and under 30 months of age. This will ensure quality and tenderness. Angus is generally a good choice, but just about any cow will be good as long as it's not a dairy cow. (they are skinny with small muscle build)

Sometimes dairy cows are auctioned off. You can buy them there. My grandma took me to an animal auction when I was a young kid. A number of the horses were bought by a glue factory. My grandma is from Alaska, she hunts and dresses animals and even eats the animals she raises but even she thought that the auction was too sad to stay at and we left with her crying. So, I'm not sure if you'd want to go there... It's not pretty. EDIT: "Why not use that money to help humans in need." Because she probably has a farm and wants to house some animals. Some people are willing to fork out some money for the welfare of animals and there's nothing wrong with that. People don't just have to be charitable towards people.

It does vary a lot by location and the purpose for which the cattle are being raised (and for whom). It was some time ago, but a man I knew who sold cows had a wide range, from about $250 - $500. Good luck. There are places that will slaughter them for you (and it may be against the law to do it yourself anyway).
