Thomas Alva Edison, ( 1847-1931) also known as "The Wizard of Menlo Park", was one of the world's most prolific inventors. He holds over 3000 patents, among them patents for the first commercially viable electric light bulb, the microphone that made the telephone possible, the transmitter and receiver for the automatic telegraph, and an improved stock- ticker. His invention of the phonograph was notable as the first successful instrument of its kind. He developed a complete electrical distribution system which was used in the first permanent central electric light power plant in the world.
Other significant inventions include the Kinetoscope, or peep-show machine. Talking pictures were based on his work in sychronizing sound and picture.
His workshops at Menlo Park and East Orange were significant as forerunners of the modern industrial research laboratory, in which teams of workers, rather than a single inventor, research a subject.
He was home-schooled by his mother, a teacher, having had only 3 months of formal schooling.
Edison became hard of hearing in his teens, a condition which worsened throughout his life. This may account for his efforts in the transmission of sound.
One could say that Edison's contributions in his lifetime were at least as great as those of almost any president, although in a different area.

There is so much more to be said about this great inventor, but I've condensed it to the major high points as best as I could manage in a limited amount of time.

Thomas Alva Edision is famous for inventing the Electric Light Bulb, Sound recording system and Motion Picture Camera. He had thousands of other inventions but the above are the most famous.

The one claim to fame he never accomplished was the Presidency.

Maybe, you are thinking of Thomas Jefferson. His major claims to fame was writing the "Declaration of Independence" and being our 3rd President. In the last few years he has had a new "claim to fame" by DNA tests indicating he fathered the children of one of his slaves(Sally Henning).

By the way, Thomas Jefferson, along with 16 other U.S. Presidents, had no middle name.
