I know there were two types of the VW thing made. One model was built on the type 3 frame,and another was built on the type 2 frame. Does anyone know which is which?..What years?

There are two types of the thing the type 181(left-hand drive, the thing) and the type 182(right-hand drive model). As well it was not based on a type 2(did get parts from) or 3, but rather got it's pan from the type 1 ghia. In the us we got it for 73 and 74, but it was built from 69 to 80.
