No, because it is an introduction to a conversation. Why do people make small talk when they first greet each other?

You don't just dive in, you slowly go into the conversation. Just because I know it is Sarah calling about needing a ride tomorrow, I don't answer the phone, "Sarah, I will pick you up at 7 am." Sarah will be offended, and feel put off.

In fact, no. firstly because it's a habit. Next, even when you see a friend on the road you have classical phrases to initiate a talk like, "hi, hey, hello etc". There is a phone word and that is "hello" in english, and every nation has created a specific word for that. Just like the classical transceiver talks. These words probably symbolize the past of technological evolution, so i believe we have to keep nostalgia alive..But i, (esp to my friends) don't usually use that word..I choose sth more sincere and informal depending on the person..

Ha! I never thought about it really ... but I will probably still say hello .. I have had people answer their phone with "Hey Tammy" and it kinda freaks me out .. even though I know they have caller ID, its just weird.

Happened to me too, also get calls and no one answers when i say hello. Also computer generated calls and there is a message telling me my number was picked and i won a free trip to Flordia. Its really annoying.I don't think these calls should be allowed by the telephone company, there must be something they can do to stop these unwanted calls.

Sometimes I do, but it has happened to me that the person using the [cell] phone in question was not the owner. I always answer my cell phone "Hi, this is /////" and if someone asks me to answer their phone, I say "???'s phone - ///// speaking."

A bit formal, but it does the trick and no one has ever commented on it.

No, because multiple people live in the same house. Is it my mom, dad, or younger brother calling? I would feel worse if I said hey mom and it was my brother.

I've never thought about it. I guess I just say hello out of habit....regardless of who is calling.
