If what you are saying is true, why even bother with the supposition of Iraqi Independence? For that matter, why not just secure Venezuela or Mexico, since they're closer? This oil thing is getting as moldy as the electoral college.

They are there to protect the interests of the United States...period...During world war II they were protecting the shipping lanes from the US to Europe. Your question about protect americans or oil is one in the same. We need oil for our way of life and it is an interest we can't ignore.
