I've been thinking about growing my hair out really long and then shaving it off and donating it to Locks of Love. I saw a clip on the news about some kids who shaved their heads to make their classmate, a cancer patient, feel better about losing his hair. It really touched me because even some of the girls participated. Plus it would be really practical because hair is such a pain to take care of.

But I was just wondering what other people thought. What are your first impressions when you see a girl walking down the street with a shaved head? I'm curious because I don't know if I'd like being stared at everywhere I went. I've never seen a girl with her head shaved or buzzed really short, so I don't know if people stare or make comments or not.

Really, shaving and Locks for Love are two completely separate issues. If you let it grow long enough that the right amount (I think 6", but check) can be cut off, Locks for Love doesn't care how much is left on your head. My friend even got a free haircut from a local hair salon because she had enough hair to donate to LfL, and her hair was still shoulder length after the cut.

When I see men or women completely hairless, I always think it's chemo, as two of my friends went through that. So be prepared to get a lot of inappropriate pity.

I'm going to honestly answer this question. If I were to see a girl with a shaved head I all the stereotypes would fly through my head such as: "is she a lesbian?" "She must be a punk or a rebel." or "I wonder if she is a cancer patient". And that's all because the look wouldn't be considered what is "normal" but i say that if you are comfortable enough with who you are then definately go ahead with it. I think your cause is a beautiful caring thing and I support it completely.

first impressions from a guy...

"wow she is confident... I wonder how long her hair has been like that..."

Now the important thing to is to wear something femmy. Some women who shave for a cause wear sweat pants for the next 3 months. Put on nice make-up with bold eyeliner, nice earrings, and pretty clothes to compliment your bold hairstyle.

Now assuming you have done that and embraced this look I would then think...

"Wow she is hot - I wish more women would have the guts to do that. How can I get my woman to do that?"

I think the look CAN be sexy, but like I said only if you embrace it. I say go for it, you will get some shocked stares, but many who stare will be jealous, curious, or attracted to you.

If you do it, I think you should wet shave it all off though. I remember seeing Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta and thinking how she looked hot, but would look so much hotter if she razor shaved it all off. Smoothe and sexy....

Good luck, let us know if you do it...

I can't say what I think as a first impression because I too, but I like people who let go of stereotype things like hair which people consider being the trademark of a woman. I admire your courage and good intentions, you have a strong character and you are a person of good nature. I can say that you will get a lot of good attention from your friends, because everyone of us has this wild side, but don't expect the exact same treatment from complete strangers, because they are fools that would never have the guts to do what you want.

I have donated my hair to locks of love three times. I have never shaved it though. I read a book once about a girl whose best friend got lukemea, so she donated her hair for her friend and then decided to shave it. I think it is a great idea to donate your hair, shaving it on the other hand might be a bit extreme.

well this is a tough one.. i've never really seen girls with shaved heads. i think if you're donating it to Locks of Love that is just awesome! if you want to grow it out then shave it off i say GO FOR IT GIRL!! and you wouldn't have to deal with straight, curly, wavy, frizzy, or whatever for a while! i think that's just the awesomest thing anyone could do! who cares if you get stared at and whatever? it's for a great cause!!
YOU SHOULD SOOO DO IT!!
good luck on deciding! =]

Well it depends on how she looks. Personally, I think it's catchy when a girl's head isn't COMPELETELY shaved, but has kind of that fuzzy look. It makes her look like a model.
But I don't recommend shaving it clean off, maybe try leaving like 2 millimeters on it to give it that exotic/risky look.
It might actually look good.
I saw a woman with that type of cut at the airport earlier, and it really did suit her, everyone thought she was a model.

the first thing i think is actually a question, and that question is " does she have the "face" for a buzz cut"? you need a good bone structure to pull off really short hair! Just like on last season of "america's next top model". The one model that Tyra wanted to have really short hair, and the model like totally freaked out, b/c she had really long hair. But Tyra told her that she should be proud of her beautiful bone structure, and she should flaunt it!

In my mind I would think maybe the person just wants to get rid of her hair, or maybe the person has been taking chemotherapy and has lost all her hair. Whatever a woman decides to do with her hair is her choice and no one should condem her. Hair doesn't make the person it is what is inside that makes a person who they are.

I would think 2 things:

1 - I remember being young with hair like that
2 - She's brave & confident; who cares what the world thinks about her personal choice of hair style
